How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening works to remove years of stain and unwanted discolouration that has accumulated. Smiling Horizon uses products containing hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. As a result of chemical reactions, the peroxide breaks down into oxygen molecule, penetrating the enamel and dentin which then breaks the bonds of the discoloured molecules resulting in lighter and whiter teeth.
Please note that teeth whitening will not work on cavities, artificial teeth, caps, crowns, veneers, or porcelain, composite, or other restorative materials. If you wish to have these whitened, it is recommended to see your dental professional to discuss your options.
Does it hurt?
Teeth whitening is a safe cosmetic procedure but can cause sensitivity or discomfort. Sensitivity is usually mild and subsides within 24 hours.
Teeth whitening can also cause gum irritation if not safely practiced and occurs when the whitening gel comes into contact with your gums. This may cause inflammation and whitening of the tissues which will subside within 30 minutes. If this occurs, Vitamin E oil will be applied directly to areas of concern.
When will you see results?
Premium whitening generally produces instant results. Teeth may appear whiter initially as the enamel becomes dehydrated during the whitening process. Dehydration will reverse in time and the colour change can take up to two weeks to stabilise. White spots and enamel defects may appear whiter as they dehydrate faster.
Initial colour changes may decrease considerably after treatment (generally within 24 hours) due to several factors such as cause of discolouration, initial shade, product used, application of product and duration of treatment.
Take-home whitening takes approximately 10-14 days to see a result.
At Smiling Horizon, a combination we have seen greater results with a combination approach. Premium whitening starts the whitening process and the homecare regime that is provided will enhance and stabilise the results.
What products do you use?
Smiling Horizon uses dental grade teeth whitening products.
- The Premium Whitening and Premium Combination Whitening uses the Beyond Max Advanced Formula Whitening Gel that has 35% hydrogen peroxide.
- The Express and Top-Up Whitening uses 44% carbamide peroxide.
- The after-care kit and take home whitening kit includes 16% carbamide peroxide
- The Protect Gel is a paste that has hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphate, potassium nitrate, fluoride and other non-hazardous, proprietary and is less than 0.1%.
What’s the difference between hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide?
Carbamide peroxide is 1/3 the strength of hydrogen peroxide. The results produced by carbamide peroxide is extended to due a slower release in oxygen molecules.
How long will it last for? How often should I do whitening?
It is normal for the whitening results to regress over time. Whitening is dependent on many factors such as discolouration, initial shade, products used, application of product, duration of application of products, individual habits and oral hygiene regimes. Generally, results from the premium and premium combination treatments last between 6-12 months. It is recommended to have an express or top-up treatment after 6 months to enhance and lighten the shade of the teeth.
What do I need to do before my appointment?
It is recommended that you have a comprehensive dental examination and clean prior to your appointment or at least within 6 months of your teeth whitening service.
Prior to your appointment, please have a good meal as the treatment will take up to an hour. In addition, please floss and brush your teeth as whitening works better on clean teeth.
How long will the treatment take?
The Express and Top-Up Whitening treatment will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
The Premium Whitening and Premium Combination Whitening will take approximately one hour to complete.
Please allow an extra 20 minutes to set-up and pack-up equipment.
Why do I need a white diet after the procedure?
A strict white or clear diet is recommended post treatment as the enamel of the teeth become more porous and susceptible to staining. It takes about 48 hours for the enamel to return to normal.
What foods and drinks can I have after whitening?
It is recommended to have a white or clear diet after the completion of your treatment. Examples of white and clear foods include:
- White rice
- White pasta
- White sauce
- Skinless chicken
- Cauliflower
- Yoghurt
- Milk
- Cheese
- Tofu
- Water
- White breads
- Banana
If you think the food or drink will stain a white shirt, try and avoid consuming these.
It should also be noted to avoid smoking or vaping during this time.
